Does anyone have tips on speeding up my computer, and is 54 mbps good speed for windows xp?

My comp is a windows xp and it is a desktop. Its so slow! HELP! any tips or suggestions. i tried deleting a lot of unused programs but it dosen't seem to help and i have comcast!

Please specify what it is slow in particular. 54mbps, I'm going to just assume you are talking about a G wireless card. That is just a connection speed, has to do with the network speed, not computer speed. How old is the hardware? When you removed these programs, did you use the Add/Remove Programs or did you just delete folders? Unless the hard drive is almost at its limit, or you have rampant registry files that are going unused, this is rarely the problem. If the hardware is more than 3-4 years old, and you are installing newer programs, don't expect this to be speedy. A general defragmenting will usually help the accessing speed of programs, but not night and day on general speed. If you are talking about slow Internet functions, then that could be some other things, and you would need to specify what speed you are paying for through Comcast, browser, etc.
