do you want to play the music on the computer controlling the desktop through the desktop or laptop speakers
Reply:You cannot control or access information on one PC without using some form of networking.

You would have to connect the two machines, and then either set your laptop to scan the media folders on the desktop PC, and play your music like that, and then use some kind of desktop control software such as VNC to control the desktop of your desktop computer.
Reply:Yes, You can use logmein.com. its a free software that you download onto the PC or MAC you want to remotely access. All you do is make a account and login the website and select your PC. you can access it from anywhere with a internet connection. But to hear audio from the computer you have to purchase a package to do so.
Reply:Every form of connection between 2 computers is a type of networking whether its via a LAN/Cat5 (network) cable or via bluetooth or infrared.

You can always use bluetooth or infrared, if both machines have these fitted, or you could use a "console" cable which directly connects your laptop to your PC.

Note that the data transfer speeds of these are quite low compared to normal home networking.
