I want to upgrade the RAM in my laptop from 1GB to 2GB, but not sure what one to buy?

i have a Compaq Presario C774tu. I did the scan at crucial.com, and it tells me i have two memory slots, one with a 1GB stick, and the other empty. It says that i dont have dual channel support, what does that mean?

Can i get another 1GB memory stick and put it in the empty slot? If so, does anyone know what brand/type of ram i should buy that will work with my computer? i know how to physically put the ram in, im just confused as how to find a ram stick that will work with my laptop,

that means that u'r processor doesn't support 2 ram , but u'r compaq laptop has 2 slots ,,,which doesn;t help in any way

so get a new processor which costs a lot !!!!!!

but still u can remove the 1 gb and get a new 2gb

u cant add a 1gb to the existing 1

I would prefer you get a kingston RAM Chip those are very durable and about the dual channel support im not really sure.
Reply:1. Your Motherboard does not support dual/quad core processing (very old comp i assume?) your processor is just single core.

Ram is easy to upgrade. search newegg.com for RAM (memory) for 1 stick of 1GB memory (since u already have 1gb in there) they are cheap. find the one with lowest Price and best reviews.

Since you dont know how comps really work I seriously advise you not to mess with your laptop RAM, as they require different sizes and are obviously much more difficult to access.
Reply:dual channel support is basically data can pass through 2 channels at a time, depends on what type of RAM ur system is compatible with, but the easiest way is to buy the same type of RAM that is already installed, and yes u can buy another 1 gig and put it into the extra slot
Reply:Just go to any computer stop or IT store and ask for new memory. You will have to let the store person do it for you, if you're a rookie. However, this is done inside the CPU, which you can find inside the panels on the underside of the laptop. Well, for God's sake don't open it, if you're new.
Reply:well you don't need to do worry of as you got windows vista it got the full support for external ram. I recommend you to use external ram through usb. That would be more convenient, fast and in budget. For more details on how can you attach external ram talk to your compaq cutomer care.
