My Compaq laptop DVD drive has suddenly stopped reading DVDs. It now reads/writes only CDs. Is thr a solution?

The issue started when I tried to burn a DVD. It burned the DVD half-way and then stopped. The drive hasn't read/written a DVD since. I tried my other OS (I have 2 Windows on my Laptop) and the same issue was faced.

The drive can read and write CDs - So I guess it can be fixed. Is there a way to do this?

that just sounds like a downward plunge towards HDD failure, i'd say take it to wherever you bought it to be prepared or call the manufacturer. Also you could check on the software you used to read/write the DVDs. Any weird things going on with it?

Reply:There are 4 things I would check...

1) Look in Control Panel, System, and Hardware Profile under the CD/DVD drive. See if the driver is correct. There are rare instances where Windows changes the driver of a CD/DVD drive to something incorrect. Just verify that the correct CD/DVD drive is being used.

2) Check in your BIOS software to assure that the correct settings for your CD/DVD drive are chosen. I can't remember whether the Compaq BIOS is accessible by pressing F10 on the initial Compaq screen or if it is F2.

3) Also, the software might not be functioning correctly. If you do not have numerous burns stored in the software, I would unstall, delete the directory, reboot, and reinstall the CD/DVD software.

4) This might sound stupid but I feel that you should be aware of this. If you are trying to read/write the same information to the computer with numerous DVDs, it will not work. Try DVDs that are totally unrelated to what you originally tried to burn. %26lt;-- This is probably unlikely but I have to put it out there.

Good luck. I hope that one of these helps.
Reply:Yeh !! it happens. If you could find the preset near by the lens fine tune it using precission screw driver. It will work. Make sure you dont disturb the CD read/write part of it.
