Is it safe to use computer without UPS?

switch on/off button of my UPS is not working. so i've connected my computer directly to switch board without UPS connection. is it safe?

i'm saving the typed documents often. any other thing i've to be careful about?

pls guide me.

thank you
Is it safe to use computer without UPS?
What exacly is a UPS?

I think it is not sure.. and i know alot about computers.
Is it safe to use computer without UPS?
lol yeah wtf is a UPS
Reply:No becuase your data might get corrupt it the power goes off while you are working and ups is a standby which help us to switch off properly
Reply:NO it isn`t because if the light goes u may not be able to save ur work at a perticular time u r doing and it may also cause bios failure in ur computer.
Reply:it is safe as long as ur saving ur documents periodically, but if u get a power outage technically it could mess up ur PC but there's a good chance it won't.
Reply:Not exactly. Keep saving and hope for the best. You do still have voltage surge protection don't you? If not, you could lose all your saved data also.
Reply:No. definitely not.

when the computer shuts off by itself too often, it will crash.

also, if u do not have a trip switch, in case of sudden voltage it will permanently damage the system.
Reply:Switchboard for an electricity circuit? What's that? Only IBM PCs up to ancient 286 is so well graded to plug directly to a wall socket; anything else doing that you risk zapping it to death. A computer-graded Power Strip is enough to shield the computer from being electrocuted 1 or 2 times.
Reply:Unless you have anything REALLY important then a UPS isn't necessary. However, if you are saving important things such as files for work, homework for school, etc. then I would recommend getting a UPS. Of course, as long as you remember to save your work frequently a UPS isn't something you would necessarily need to have.
Reply:there is no problem but your computer will be switched off on its own when the power goes on. it maydamage your computer in long run!!!
Reply:depends on your location power supply reliability. if there are brownouts and blackouts often, then it is better to have UPS.

UPS is also used to manage power spikes (power surges) which can damage sensitive electrical equipment like PCs. so if your area is prone to power surges or maybe lightning strike effects, not having a UPS can result in a fried PC (a power surge can burn out your PC power supply, motherboard, and other stuff on the motherboard like the CPU, memory, add-on cards, harddisk and cdrom drives.

but in your situation of a faulty UPS, if its just power surges you have to be careful about, buying a power surge protector device can be a quick workaround (not a permanent solution, you would still prefer a working UPS) for protecting your PC.
Reply:No - your data may not be recovered later as it will be not saved after power failure %26amp; many more things to follow.
Reply:No, please don't use your computer without UPS if there are powern fluctuations. I was in similar situation, in fact no power fluctuation but socket was loose and comp used to get turned off suddenly. after few days my hard disc was dammaged and I had to buy new one.
Reply:UPS gives u enough time to shut down the PC properly when there is a power cut

u shd go for a UPS if a lot of power cut is observed at ur place

also UPS can save the PC's internal chips ans electronic circuits from Voltage fluctuations
Reply:IT IS SAFE TO USE COMPUTER WITHOUT UPS IF IN THE AREA WHERE YOU LIVE THERE IS LESS POWER CUT OFF, OTHERWISE IF THRE IS HIGH POWER CUT OF OR IRREGULAR VOLTAGE THEN I PREFER TO USE A UPS
Reply:UPS stands for uninterrupted power supply. it is not a component of your PC and is not essential to run a computer. however it provides a stable inflow of volt/current for your computer, PCs come with a built in facility(SMPS) to stabilize the input it gives off to its various components but its still a good idea to have one if you live in an area with a lot of voltage fluctuations. besides that the UPS also has a battery and serves as a power backup for your PC. when you have a power cut it would keep your PC alive for about 10 minutes, quite enough time to save your precious work. its not good for you pc to shut down suddenly with a power cut, it might corrupt your hard drive and may cause various software troubles too. shut down windows the way its suppposed to.

so i recomend having one. if yours is broken just get it repaired or just get a new one. its not expensive.
Reply:UPS is uninterrupted power supply.

It is just like inverter when light goes of your computer doesn't goes off suddenly it works normally on UPS. so you get time to save your data and switch off your computer with proper shutdown. It also act as stabilizer it stabilizes current in case of low or high voltage.

I also use UPS
Reply:UPS is Uninterupable Power Supply

It is used to keep your computer runningincase of a power failure

Basically if you don't have one and the power goes your computer will just lose power
Reply:Hey! Noddy.

Without UPS the problems will be, as follows......

1) When ever you are working with any document like serious work. if power goes off. The whole data will loose.if in case u dint save doc for time being.

2) Any component (Hardware) will get problem in your PC. if sudden abrupt in POWER off.

3) The Major Problem will be your Hard Disk. Reason behind this problem is BAD SECTORS will form in u r hard disk. sudden abrupt in power off.

So, Better i suggest u to use UPS point. and it gives Backup power if power goes off. u can off immediately. and it controls power fluctuations from high voltage in power.
Reply:No, you don't need a backup power supply unit (UPS). Like others have said, in case the electricity goes out, you may loose your data. Microsoft Office 2003 %26amp; 2007 has saved me more than once when the power has gone out...I don't know how it does, but it has a file recovery system that seems to work like magic. Anyway, what I do, is just have two or three surge protectors in line. I am more concerned when the electricity turns back on than when it shuts down.

You see, when the power company turns the power back on, the transformer nearest to your house or business is not able to react intantaneously, to give a clean, steady current. Instead, for a split second, there is an electrical spike which goes right across the transformer without being modulated, it's called an instantaneous peak, which literally, has an infinite current. It only exists for milliseconds, but it is enough to seriously damage your computer if you are not protected.

Most UPS also have surge protection, so you get the benefits of both a power outage backup and a power on surge. But seeing as how most of my work is not critical at home, I am not too concerned. However, I am very concerned with that power spike.

I buy surge protectors with the highest Joules rating available, they tend to be more expensive office types. I put them in series, plugging them one after the next, this is becuse the surge protection is additive. So if I have two surge protectors each rated 6000 joules, I have a total protection on the second series connected surge protector of 12000 Joules. A really good surge protector will have a fuse, but even fuses take "time" to burn out. In the world of milliseconds, an instantaneous surge can make it even across the fuse before the fuse burns out. The capacitors in the surge protector, soaks up most of the bad current, however, there can be enough to still damage a computer with a single surge protector of a high rating and a short fuse.

This is another reason why I series connect more than one surge protector...it has to go through the first surge protector and part of the surge is absorbed, reducing the damage potential on the spike. So what I do is put my non-expensive stuff on the first or second surge protectors, things like a desk lamp or cheap speakers. On the second surge protector, I plug in some other not so expensive equipment and finally on the third surge protector, I have my computer and most senstitive components plugged into that one.

It seems most people just buy any ole' surge protector, have no concept of Joule ratings and think a cheapo $5 surge protector for a toaster is going to be adequate, until they have a thunderstorm and a surge happens and their computer becomes toast!

So, if you are really interested in protecting sensitive data, critical work, irreplaceable memories or photo's...I think you ought to get a replacement for that UPS. If on the other hand, you are playing games, chatting on line, checking some emails and doodling on the computer where nothing is critical, I think surge protector(s) are adequate.
Reply:no its not safe because if power goes off then you will not be able to save your work. Secondly if there is any variation in voltage then your hard disk gets bad sectors developed on it which is a physical damage and your data is also lost. So UPS is must for your pc
Reply:absolutely yes. just remember to save your work at least every five minutes so you wont lose it once the electricity fluctuates.
Reply:Hi Boss

I would think the safest thing to do is replace the switch quite easy. I assume you are in the USA where things may be different than the UK. I had problems and used mains direct while I repaired UPS.

Good Luck

FOR THOSE WHO ARE ANSWERING UPS MEANS UNINTERRUPTED POWER SUPPLY. A BACKUP SYSTEM INCASE OF POWER FAILURE AND ANTI-SURGE.
Reply:Its very unsafe for the computer. The computer suddenly closes,in the middle of a run when hard disk is spinning at a high speed, exposing computer to damage and stopping the cooling fan and unsaved contents are lost and hard disk is exposed to crash risk
Reply:UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply

It depends on your personal like of risks. You can do it, and you can be fine doing it. However, if you get a surge, or power flicker or anything like that, you can not only risk losing your data, but frying your motherboard or other accessories...
Reply:I thought like you and had to replace the hard disk soon. Better replace the switch.
Reply:its safe to use UPS ............... if u connect directly to switch board sometimes shortcircuit will occur and it may create major problem to ur computer...
Reply:not a good idea. always use a UPS one day my modem blew up smoke came out.

unless you working in the PM's office in Delhi use a UPS. HAHA
