What I want to do is print the same small doc 4 times on one sheet of A4, ie, each doc on A5, then cut into 4. It surely can't be difficult, but how do I do it?

It depends on your operating system and printer.
(Guaranteed on Mac OS X with laser printer`)
if its possible hit the print dialogue and enter print 4 copies then you may have a layout button (called n-up or similar) which allows for 1,2,4,6,9 or 16 per page.
this is mostly on laser printers and Much easier on the Mac OS than Linux or Windows.
