How do you know which processors are compatible with your motherboard?

Go to the manufactures website and take a look.

If it's a new PC and you have the sheet with the motherboard specs, then you will know, could always pull the old one out, check the pin order, re heat sink and re-install it.

Every motherboard's website has a list of compatible processors for that motherboard. It is also listed in the box that came with the motherboard when you bought it.
Reply:The easiest way is to identify your motherboard and look up its CPU support list on the mobo manufactures web site. If they do not have that info, look at stores for the same board or boards with the same chipset for CPU support. Also identifying what socket you have will narrow it down considerably as well.

The best way to find out this info is to download CPU-Z, which is a simple little program that will answer all your questions:

-Under CPU tab and Package row, it will tell you your CPU socket.

-Under Mainboard tab look at Mainboard row to try and figure out what board you have. If that fails, go by chipset, which is a row bellow (don't worry about revisions).

As stated above look at websites to determine your CPU support. One last note, I'd do a BIOS update before putting a new CPU in, as support for new CPU's is sometimes added in newer BIOS versions.
