I recently sold my laptop on ebay and i was wondering if there was a way to wipe my hard drive without erasing the operating system because I did not receive any restore discs with it

No, not easily.





What you can do is try to erase all personal information - data files, IE caches, user profiles, etc.





Unfortunately Microsoft does not make it easy to find them.





Deleting a file does not actually wipe the file clean. To do that, you probably have to search for a file delete utility that does wipe the file clean.





Check with your buyer to see if the OS is really needed. Most people prefer to reinstall anyway, and many may have access to recovery disks through friends.
